Some days, my desk looks like a small hurricane hit it — notebooks scattered, half-written scenes, stray dialogue snippets, and random sparks of ideas all jumbled together. If you peeked into my creative space, you might wonder how anything ever gets done.

Those messy beginnings are where every story starts.

Here’s how I take the swirl of ideas and turn it into something that makes sense:

  1. Collect Everything – Every idea, no matter how small or wild, gets captured. I use notebooks, sticky notes, and index cards to capture all the thoughts that swirl through my mind. Some ideas go together while others are put aside for another “someday” project.
  2. Map the Story Arcs – I sketch simple outlines, color-code plot points, and track character journeys. Seeing it all visually often sparks new ideas. Index cards on a large bulletin board help me visualize the story.
  3. Experiment Freely – Not everything sticks, and that’s okay. Some ideas fizzle, some take on a life of their own. I embrace the entire process, knowing chaos is the first step toward clarity.

What matters most is remembering that chaos is not the enemy. Every great idea, every surprising plot twist, every memorable character begins in this messy, wonderful space.

By embracing the mess and organizing it thoughtfully, I find clarity — and the stories take shape.
