Yes, I know there is snow on the ground and it barely gets above freezing during the day but it is time to start the garden! Seed starting is underway here, inside of course. Joe surprised me last weekend when he asked for a plan for a greenhouse. It won’t be ready to start seeds in this year so we’ve set up a seed starting place in the house. Already we have a variety of peppers, lettuce, spinach, artichokes, gourds, oregano, and asparagus going. Over the next two weeks, we’ll be starting all our onions, tomatoes, herbs, broccoli, cauliflower, and more. Once we get past the middle of March we’ll be directly planting peas outside in one of our new raised beds (I’d share a picture but we haven’t built them yet…too much snow on the ground).

It’s our 4th year of gardening here. Each year we learn more and more. Last year we had a horrible garden season. There was a vole invasion that wiped out practically everything. What they didn’t kill the horrible heatwave did. This year, the new raised beds will have hardware cloth under them so the little buggers can’t get to the plants. We will also be installing a watering system and adding timers to help keep everything watered.

I can’t wait to see everything grow!
