My goals are BIG! If I sat here on January 1st and simply said “I want to write 4 books in 2021” that would be great. How do I actually go about getting those 4 books written? This is a sample of how I break down my monthly goals into weekly goals. This isn’t perfect by any means but it gives me an overview and guide of what I need to accomplish during the month.
Remember the January goals? Here they are…
- Finishing my edits on Mayhem at the Mine.
- Send the manuscript to my editor.
- Design the cover.
- Begin marketing
- Decide on a name for book 3
- Outline book 3
- Start writing book 3
I should clarify that goals 1-4 are all for Mayhem at the Mine, the second book in the Comstock Cozy Mystery Series. Goals 5 – 7 are for the third book in the Comstock series, which is obviously unnamed at this point.
Week 1
- Finish my edits on Mayhem (complete by Sunday, Jan. 3)
- Send manuscript to editor (Sunday, Jan. 3)
- Begin Marketing – pick quotes from book and make teaser graphics.
- Decide on release date.
Week 2
- Design cover
- Decide on cover reveal day
- Begin countdown to release day
- decide about doing a pre-order
Week 3
- Review notes from editor and fix any problems
- Send to proofreader
- Continue marketing efforts for Mayhem.
At this point it’s strictly marketing for Mayhem so it’s time to start working on the next project.
4. Begin outline for book 3
Week 4
- Continue book 3 outline
- Name book 3
- Continue marketing efforts for Mayhem.

It’s helpful to see how you break down your quarterly goals into monthly goals, then weekly goals. Thanks for sharing!
